Like other programmes, the research and advocacy agenda of PELUM Uganda is set by the member organisations based on prevailing issues affecting the agricultural sector and specifically small-holder farmers. The advocacy is evidence based, utilizing facts and figures from conducted research
Specific Objectives
- To contribute to creating a conducive environment that favors small-scale farmers and MO interests including Land issues, Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), climate change, fair trade etc.
- To increase budget allocation to the agriculture sector
- To increase the knowledge and analysis of policies by PELUM members
PELUM Uganda has conducted on;
- Ensuring the protection of agriculture and small-scale farmers in the economic Partnership Agreement negotiations: the case of the special safe guard mechanism
- Towards enhancing small-scale farmers’ livelihoods and food security through indigenous climate change adaptation
- Analysis of the agriculture budget
Other areas of interest for research include; land, seeds and policy research that is related to land, seeds, trade, agriculture and budgets among others
To successfully disseminate research results, PELUM Uganda simplifies the findings and translates them into local languages so that it is accessible to small-holder farmers
It is important to note that PELUM Uganda’s research and advocacy programme involves the active participation of thematic committees comprising of member organisations. The four thematic areas are; land, sustainable agriculture, access to markets and environment, natural resources and climate change. These committees help in shaping the specific advocacy activities, reviews and engagement in lobbying. Each committee is chaired by a member organisation that is competent in the given thematic area.
